In 2026, we aim to compile a comprehensive species list of dragonflies across two valley mire sites: Greenland and Hartland Moor. Greenland Mire has been part of our peatland restoration project, and we are keen to monitor how the site develops over time. Hartland Moor, by contrast, is a well-established valley mire, and we are particularly interested in understanding which dragonfly species occur on this outstanding wetland.
Our plan for this year is to survey both sites three times: once in the early season, once in mid-season, and once in the late season. This will be the first year of this survey series, which we intend to repeat every 3–5 years as part of our long-term monitoring programme for the NNR.
The methodology for this monitoring programme has been developed by Kevin Edge. The data collected will also allow for valuable comparisons between the two sites, particularly in assessing how peatland restoration at Greenland (and similar sites) contributes to the recovery of this important and species-rich habitat.
These surveys are open to both experienced and beginner dragonfly surveyors.
