This is our second field day with Robin Walls, Dorset’s County Recorder for vascular plants, helping us to explore and identify our Priority Plant Species across the Purbeck Heaths National Nature Reserve (NNR).
These sessions are for ideal for anyone interested in botanical surveying and keen to contribute to our plant recording efforts on the Purbeck Heaths. Whether you are a seasoned botanist or an enthusiastic learner, you will gain valuable insight into the identification of our most important species.
This second day is on Saturday, 12th July covering Godlingston and Studland Heath.

- Expected Distance: Up to 7 km over heathland terrain, including boggy and marshy areas
Robin will guide us through key habitats where we will search for a number of the most important species. Potential highlights include:

- Dorset heath
- Shoreweed
- Marsh Clubmoss
- Brwon beak-sedge
- Lesser bladderwort
- Dioecious sedge
- Yellow centaury
- New Zealand Pygmyweed
- Bog Orchid
- Marsh St John’s-wort
- Spring Quillwort
- Sheep’s-bit
- Allseed
- Hoary Cinquefoil
- Heath Pearlwort
- Annual Knawel
- Lesser Bladderwort
Please note: These species are rare and sightings cannot be guaranteed, but we’ll also be on the lookout for other notable plants throughout the day. We will also look at the habitats and why these are suitable for some of our priority species.
What to Bring:
- Sturdy, waterproof footwear (wellies or waterproof hiking boots recommended)
- Clothing suitable for a full day outdoors, including protection from sun, rain, and wind
- Sufficient food and water for the day
- Optional: notebook, hand lens, camera
The day will mostly be spent in the field unless weather conditions require changes to the plan.
