This is our second Aquatic Invertebrate pond dipping session of the year!

This year, our focus will be on Studland Heath, where we plan to sample between 10 and 20 ponds. Many of these ponds have never been surveyed for aquatic macroinvertebrates before, so we are hopeful they will yield valuable new data. As always, your contributions are incredibly important to the success of this work!

We will start this day at 10 AM at the indicated location. From there it is a 10 minutes walk to our first pond. Depending on the number of people attending, we might be able to cover 3 or 3 ponds all in close proximity to each other.

This session is suitable for those who are new to this kind of surveys, as well as those who are experienced. If you are completely new to this, please see our sampling methodology described in this document:  Microsoft Word – Macro invertebrate sampling methodology 2025. We will also go through this document during this session and I will make sure to have a few printed as well.

For on the day, make sure to take:

  • Clean wellies/ gumboots (see for this our biosecurity protocol)
  • Your lunch/ snacks
  • Sufficient drink
  • Sun protection (i.e. hat, sun screen, etc.)

I will otherwise bring all materials needed for the sampling. If you have your own waders, feel free to bring these along as well (though it depends on the individual ponds if waders are needed).

If you are hoping to come this day, please register yourself for this survey below. For any questions, please contact me via: jasper@purbeckecology.org.uk.
