Large Marsh Grasshopper survey

Email: peter.robertson@rspb.org.uk

We will be surveying two populations of the UKs largest grasshopper, Large Marsh Grasshopper, at RSPB Arne and RSPB Grange Heath on Wednesday 31st July.  Meet at RSPB Arne Car Park at 11.00.  In the morning we will survey the population at nearby Grip Heath before heading over to RSPB Grange Heath to survey the population there in the afternoon.  Large Marsh Grasshopper males make a distinctive ticking noise and it is this we will be listening for as part of the survey.  If you’ve never heard it before, you can have a listen here https://soundcloud.com/the-british-library/large-marsh-grasshopper-meare-heath-somerset-1960s .  We will also be carrying out visual searches among the vegetation for the females.

Large Marsh Grasshopper likes wet conditions and both sites are lowland mires.  You will need wellies or waterproof boots.  You will also need to be prepared to walk across some rough terrain to reach both sites, particularly the Grange heath site.

There is not much parking so we will need to car share to drive over to Grange Heath.  We will aim to be back to Arne Car Park by 4pm.  As we’ll be out for a while, please bring some lunch and plenty to drink.

If you are planning on attending or have any queries, please contact peter.robertson@rspb.org.uk.
