We are very pleased to announce a great learning for anyone with a passion for botany! This summer, Robin Walls, Dorset’s County Recorder for vascular plants, will be leading three dedicated field days in June, July, and August to help us explore and identify priority plant species across the Purbeck Heaths National Nature Reserve (NNR).

These sessions are ideal for anyone interested in botanical surveying and keen to contribute to plant recording efforts on the Purbeck Heaths. Whether you are a seasoned botanist or an enthusiastic learner, you will gain valuable insight into the identification of our most important species.

Our first day in on Wednesday, 18th June covering Hartland Moor & Middlebere Heath

  • Start Time: 10:00 AM
  • Finish Time: Around 16.00
  • Meeting Location: see map and What3Words location provided
  • Expected Distance: Up to 7 km over heathland terrain, including boggy and marshy areas

Robin will guide us through key habitats where we will search for a number of the most important species. Potential highlights include:

  • Lesser Water-Plantain
  • Dioecious Sedge
  • Bog Sedge
  • Great Sundew
  • Marshwort
  • Allseed
  • Marsh Clubmoss
  • Chaffweed
  • Pillwort
  • Lesser Butterfly Orchid
  • Lesser Bladderwort
  • Nordic Bladderwort
  • Pale Heath Violet

Please note: These species are rare and sightings cannot be guaranteed, but we’ll also be on the lookout for other notable plants throughout the day. We will also look at the habitats and why these are suitable for some of our priority species.

What to Bring:

  • Sturdy, waterproof footwear (wellies or waterproof hiking boots recommended)
  • Clothing suitable for a full day outdoors, including protection from sun, rain, and wind
  • Sufficient food and water for the day
  • Optional: notebook, hand lens, camera

The day will mostly be spent in the field unless weather conditions require changes to the plan.

Please note that booking is essential, as spaces are limited. Please reserve your place early to avoid disappointment.

If you have any questions about this day, please contact Jasper Iepema: Jasper@purbeckecology.org.uk.
