This is our first aquatic invertebrate survey of 2026!

This year, our focus will be on ponds within the grazing unit. In 2023, we surveyed 18 ponds in this area, and we hope to revisit most of them this season.

This first session will act as a refresher on our pond sampling methods. It’s ideal for anyone who hasn’t joined before or would like to go over the methodology again. That said, all samples collected on the day will be fully analysed, so experienced participants are very welcome to join as well. There are five ponds within close proximity, allowing us to split into smaller groups if needed.

We will meet at 10:00 AM at the indicated location on Hartland Moor. From there, it’s approximately a 20-minute walk to Jubilee Pond. Depending on group size, we expect to survey between 3 and 5 ponds, all located near each other.

This session is suitable for both beginners and those with more experience. Please also note that there is no need to be an expert in identifying aquatic invertebrates. This kind of surveys are relatively easy to do and are suitable for anyone with an interest in nature and biological recording. No previous knowledge required! We will also go through the survey guidance document during the session, and printed copies will be available.

What to bring:

  • Clean wellies/gumboots (please follow our biosecurity protocol)
  • Lunch and/or snacks
  • Plenty of drinking water
  • Sun protection (e.g. hat, sunscreen)

All sampling equipment will be provided. If you have your own waders, feel free to bring them, although their use will depend on the ponds we visit.

If you would like to attend, please register using the link below.
