The Purbeck Natural History Forum (PNHF), in collaboration with the Dorset Environmental Record Centre (DERC), is hosting a Lichen Identification Workshop focused on Cladonia species (commonly known as Reindeer Lichen) in the Purbeck area. The workshop will also cover some other important lichen species found in the region.

Led by Bryan Edwards, an ecologist at DERC with extensive knowledge of local lichens, this session will provide valuable training in field identification. Bryan will also lead additional lichen field training sessions and surveys (click these links to register: Lichen field ID session 1Lichen Field ID session 2 ).

Why Lichens Matter?

Lichens play a crucial role in UK heathlands by supporting biodiversity, stabilizing soil, and contributing to nutrient cycling. They provide habitats for invertebrates, aid in soil formation, and serve as indicators of air quality. Some species also fix nitrogen, improving soil fertility. However, lichens are increasingly threatened by air pollution, habitat loss, overgrazing, and climate change. Monitoring their presence and distribution is essential for maintaining the health of our heathland ecosystems.

Workshop Details

This workshop aims to enhance participants’ field identification skills and encourage lichen recording. Following the session, participants will be invited to visit known lichen hotspots in the Purbeck Heaths and surrounding areas to record species, either individually or in small groups.

  • Location: National Trust office at Currendon (Studland)
  • Schedule: Morning classroom session followed by an afternoon field session
  • Additional Details: Specific information will be shared with registered participants closer to the date
